Best Places In Stockholm For Retro Gamers

April 15, 2017 By Aiden Leave a Comment

If you’re the sort of person who enjoys going to old school arcades and spending your coins on games of Pac-Man and other classics, then you might be looking for a fun places like that in the city of Stockholm. Unfortunately, this craze that swept America and Germany in the 1980s isn’t quite as alive in Sweden. But don’t let that get you down! There are still a few places around town to get your gaming on, if you’re up for the challenge.

Ugglan Boule & Bar

This right here is really the #1 place to go for all of your retro gaming needs. It’s got your old school arcade games (arkadspel in Swedish), though the options here are limited. You can play Pac-Man, Pong, Asteroids, Sprint, and some retro Sega games. But here’s the thing – there are like the original old school arcade cabinets and they don’t work so well sometimes. So, you might make the trek here just to discover that your preferred gaming is being finicky at the moment. So, keep that in mind. Oh, and you should definitely make a reservation on their website to make sure your arcade game is available for you.

What really makes Ugglan special is that it’s not just retro arcade cabinets. They have pretty much any type of game that you want to play. You can throw darts with some buddies while you down some Swedish beer. My personal favorite is the collection of pinball machines, which is pretty awesome. And if you’re feeling a bit more cerebral, then you can challenge a mate to a game of chess while you sip on a cold brew.

Bring a whole group of friends and chose from the assortment of board games for a fun night out. Ugglan also has pretty much any table game that you can think of. This includes shuffleboard tables, foosball tables, pool tables, air hockey tables, some ping pong tables and probably some more that I’ve forgotten about right now! There is truly no shortage of gaming tables there.

They even have a game there that I’d never heard of before. It’s called boules and it’s a French game that is well known in Paris. So you can even try games that might be new to you!

Make no mistake though, this is a classy place and not the usual type of dive bar where you’d find an assortment of games like beer pong and dart boards. They have great beer on tap and excellent food.

You can find Ugglan at: 116 40, Närkesgatan 6, 116 40 Stockholm

HEY STHLM

If you like retro Japanese arcade games, then HEY STHLM is definitely the place for you to go! here you can find more than 30 different arcade games to play, some of which you will recognize and other you might not. They also have some pinball machines for the enthusiasts like me.

This place is a lot of fun and the arcade cabinets aren’t as finicky as they are over at Ugglan. However, this place is small and darker than Ugglan. So, keep that in mind as you decide on what type gaming experience you want to have.

Maybe you’ll just be satisfied cursing at Ghosts ‘N Goblins since that game is so freaking difficult! Or, bring a friend and challenge him to a game of Street Fighter!

Find it at: Gyldéngatan 2 113 27 Stockholm

Heron City

If table games are more your style, then you might want to venture out to Heron City. At O’Leary’s Bowling you can not only bowl a few games, but they have a handful of pool tables that you can play on. While that doesn’t exactly quench a thirst for some old school gaming, it’s still pretty cool that you can play billiards or bowl here, if that interests you.

It’s definitely not cheap, and it doesn’t offer the same experience that you get at Ugglan. However, it is nice for a change of pace.

It’s been almost 3 years since I was last at Heron City, but they also used to have around 40 arcade cabinets where you buy a card, which you then use to play games. Sort of like Dave and Busters power cards in America. I’m not sure if this is still the case, but it might be worth checking out if you’re interested and can’t get to Ugglan.

Find it at: Dialoggatan 2, King Curve

Do you know of any other places in Stockholm that are good for gamers? If so, drop a comment so that I can add it to the list!

An Introduction To Swedish Coffee Culture

November 13, 2016 By Aiden Leave a Comment

sweden coffee

Coffee has become popular worldwide. As we chug our brews to go, on the run, or even hastened around a water cooler at work, this is simply not the way it is done in Sweden. Coffee has become a culture in Sweden. It is a way of life and strongly embraced by the Swedish, and for good reason.

Coffee is a staple of long talks, meetings with friends and simply enjoying life for the people of Sweden. While other major areas of the world are under extreme pressure and run at almost frantic rates, Sweden kicks back, relaxes, and enjoys every sip of their coffee.

The coffee break, or fika, is when people are able to sit back with a delicious rich brew, have a pastry and catch up with friends and family. Even at the office it is a big affair with co workers relaxing together and catching up with day to day news. The Swedish people use the fika as a time to relax and unwind.

The fika has become so much more than just a simple coffee break. It has actually become a custom for the Swedish. Each and every citizen carves out a specified amount of time from every day to sit back, unwind and drink a delicious hot beverage. This beverage (which can be coffee or tea) is typically consumed with a sweet pastry.

The whole thing to this culture is that everyone does it every day. The Swedish make this a ritual that is worked not only into their work week, but also into the weekends. It is something that they do religiously and take a great deal of effort to keep consistent in their lives.

The pastries that the Swedish enjoy with their fika are also quite varied. While a sweet breakfast type pastry is usually enjoyed, one can also find breads, rolls, and even sandwiches as a part of the fare. It marks a time in their days that is filled with thankfulness and ease of heart and mind.

The traditional brews that are served at fika tend to be robust in nature. These are slowly roasted, rich and dark brews that are slowly sipped and savored. They require no special flavorings or creams and taste extraordinary alone or with embellishments.

There are those who do rather enjoy a cappucinno type brew though. These individuals embrace fika just as much as any other person. Their brew of choice starts with that rich, dark embolden brew, but then adds flavors and rich creams from a milk frother to it. These individuals swear by the delicacies of their fika and the many tastes that they enjoy.

The traditional coffee shop that Americans and many Europeans enjoy can be found, but are not readily accepted as traditional fika fare. These tend to be more for the tourists and guests who come from other parts of Europe and the United States. Fika is just a word to those visitors who will never truly embrace the benefits of fika and the culture that embraces it.

What makes fika so unique is that this is not your ordinary 10 minute coffee break. The Swedish take over 40 minutes, and sometimes hours on the fika. What is more is that this coffee break typically happens three to four times a day at these elongated periods of time. The tradition seems to stem on stressing the socialization of the event more than the actual coffee.

Swedish love coffee and this is why the fika has become a tradition for them. The coffees are quite varied from region to region but the outcome is the same. People take the time throughout their day to get in touch with those around them and form a stronger bond throughout the community.

The Haga Parkmuseum

The Haga Park Museum is located in the lush park of Solna. The park itself has many great monuments to visit such as the structures modeled after architecture from Turkey and Chin. It also has the abandoned site of an unfinished castle near a lovely lake that is breathtaking in winter or summer. The museum is easy to access on public transportation from the center of town.

The Etnografiska Museet

The Ethnographic Museum is located in the northern part of the city, but is easy to find with a local bus. It houses a large selection of artifacts that documents Sweden’s influence on world issues. In the summer, its darling tea house is open for the public to explore and get a taste of Japanese culture.

Stockholms Medeltidsmuseum

One of the coolest places to see for free is the Museum of Medieval Stockholm. You can see how the capital looked centuries ago thanks to this museum housed in an underground cavern. Here you can see ruins of an old fortress that made up the original foundations of the city.

Kulturhuset

This museum offers a revolving door of expos each season that feature on anything cultural from fashion photography to musical concerts. This museum is a great place to unwind and see the latest things happening in the city’s burgeoning art market. You will not want to miss the exhibitions as they change regularly which makes it an attractive option for those who will be visiting Sweden for an extended period of time.

As you can see, Stockholm has plenty of great places to visit when you do not have much money to spend. It is a great place to explore, but its winter weather means to cannot spend all of your time outdoors!

7 Best Things To Do In Stockholm In October

October 19, 2016 By Aiden Leave a Comment

stockholm beer and whiskey festival

October is coming up in six days and you still want to squeeze in one more vacation before the weather drops to cooler temperatures. Maybe, you just want to go away to Stockholm, Sweden because you think Oktoberfest is overrated. But the question is, what is there to do in Stockholm in October? Below are seven things that might help you enjoy your autumn vacation in Stockholm.

Glogg Tasting
With summer on the way out the door, cooler weather is poised to take it’s place all over the northern hemisphere. Not a fan of cold weather? You will want to listen to this. Glogg is a traditional Swedish drink made of red wine and the typical spices from the Scandinavian tradition. It has been proven that alcohol will warm you up and make you loosen up. If you are lucky, you could meet a few new friends during a glogg tasting.

Rooftop Pool and Sauna
Yes, Sweden is part of Scandinavia. It is closer to the North Pole and much colder as the year draws to a close. Sweden has many popular saunas too. Some of them let you go in naked. But, why not spice it up a bit and go into a pool or sauna on the rooftop? That’s right, you can warm up while taking a dip in a nice heated pool and looking out at the city at night. This might be the perfect thing for a romantic getaway in Stockholm for you and your lover/spouse.

Visit the Stockholm Beer and Whiskey Festival
Still want to go to Oktoberfest, but don’t want to go to Germany? We recommend trying out the Stockholm Beer and Whiskey Festival instead. It runs from September 29th to October 1st and October 6th to the 8th this year. All of you alcohol lovers can enhance your knowledge of beer, whiskey, cider, and Calvados, join the competitions, join the schools and master classes, and indulge in the restaurants. This year will mark the twenty-fifth festival too.

Go to Church
Not really, just go visit the churches in Stockholm. The tours are free and you can go check out the artwork inside. About Travel suggests that you should check out these churches on your trip: The Royal Cathedral (“Storkyrkan”) in Stockholm in Gamla Stan, the Katarina Church at Högbergsgatan 15, St Maria Magdalena at St. Paulsgatan 10 on Sodermalm, Riddarholmen Church, and the Gustav Vasa Church along Karlbergsvägen. Going to church might not be so bad in this case.

Go on a Photography Tour of Stockholm
This one is for all the photography fans that are bound for Stockholm this October. You join a professional photographer at Slussen Metro-station and go on a photo tour through some of Stockholm’s most photographed places.  A photo tour is just as it sounds for anyone that is interested. You go on a tour of a city and takes pictures. This event runs from September 24 to December 31.

Enjoy the Sunsets
This one is the most simple on the list. All you have to do is take a walk around Stockholm with your sweetheart and enjoy the view of the sunset over the city. As autumn and winter approach, the sun sets earlier and the dusk is long. This could be perfect for a romantic mood that you are looking for. A nice sun-set walk could be a nice little prelude for a dip in a heated rooftop pool as mention in number two on this list.

Take a Bite of Some Fresh Fika
Have a sweet and looking for something yummy to eat in a nice October in Stockholm? Look no further than some nice fika? You just need three things with this: coffee, cake/pie, and friends to chat with. This is a perfect way to spend a fall afternoon while on vacation. Fika is a tradition all over Sweden. You can sip on your coffee, feast of some yummy cake or pie, and have a deep conversation with friends during the summer, but it can be done best during the autumn and winter too.
