Liana’s Must-Try Foods When You Visit Stockholm

October 18, 2016 By Aiden Leave a Comment

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden that is known for its history and beauty. While some tourists visit the region for a hands-on learning experience, others stop in just for the scenery.  Stockholm does, after all, have fourteen islands and more than fifty bridges.

Regardless of whether you are visiting for business or pleasure, you have to eat. Here are seven foods you must try while visiting Stockholm, Sweden.

1.) Swedish Pea Soup

There is no way that you can visit a historic town like Stockholm and not try Swedish pea soup. The yellow delight is a cultural classic that many enjoy throughout the year. Pea soup found its origins in the Middle Ages when times were simpler, and the world was a mystery. The yellow mixture was an experiment that turned into a tradition in which descendants of Sweden take pride in today. (I loved this soup so much, that when I got home I bought a cheap soup maker so that I could make it myself!)

2.) Boiled and Mashed Carrots

Swedes recognize the orange vegetables as Rotmos when they are mixed and smashed together. Some chefs combine carrots with salmon and potato mash to create a complete meal.

3.) Potato and Rutabaga

Those who are not fond of meat may forgo poultry for mashed potatoes and vegetables. Potato and Rutabaga is a favored dish in Sweden because of its simplicity. Nearly anyone can boil, mash, and add seasoning to make the dish their own. Potato and Rutabaga may be considered by some as a poor man’s meal, but there is no way that you can leave Stockholm without trying this signature dish.

4.) Pickled Salmon

Pickles go a long way when you are in Sweden. Not only can you enjoy the cucumbers by themselves but you can also use the juice when making meat. Pickled salmon is one of those signature dishes that you should try first. The unique taste of the dish will send a positive signal to your palette and set the tone for the culinary exploration ahead.

5.) Fish Balls

Also known as Fiskbullar or fiskeboller, fish balls in Sweden are usually purchased in a can and served with mashed potatoes or rice. Some chefs also combine Fiskbullar with pasta, though such tradition is not as popular in Sweden.

Although popular in the region, fish balls are not exclusive to Sweden. Southeast Asia also uses the food creation in its dishes though the manner in which they are used differs from Swedish culinary practices.

6.) Swedish Pancakes

These are not your ordinary pancakes that are basic and boring. Swedish pancakes are sweet delights served during breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Chefs are meticulous when preparing Swedish pancakes for dessert. From rolling and stuffing the cakes to dressing them with a touch of powdered sugar, culinary artists have fun with the dish. You must try this meal before leaving Stockholm.

7.) Crisp Bread

A snack that  Stockholm tourists may enjoy is crisp bread. The dish, which mainly consists of rye flour, has been baked in central Sweden since 500 AD. The rich history that the food dish has is one good reason to give it a try in Stockholm.

Fun Things To Do In Stockholm In The Fall

September 24, 2016 By Aiden Leave a Comment

Kungsträdgården

The capital of Sweden and one of the most picturesque cities in Scandinavia, Stockholm is at its best in the fall. Cool days paired with brilliantly colored leaves create the perfect atmosphere for sightseeing, shopping and soaking up the Swedish culture. If you’re planning a vacation in Stockholm before winter hits, take advantage of these entertaining activities.

Nordiska Museet Choklad Festival

Indulge your sweet tooth at the Choklad Festival, which takes place each fall at the Nordiska Museet. During this weekend-long event, Sweden’s best chocolatiers show off their world-class sweets. Taste unusual chili chocolate, buy a box of candies to take home, and watch the chefs compete for top baking honors.

Fall Colors

Stockholm’s tree-lined streets and shores burst with radiant color in late September and early October. No fall visit to the city is complete without an afternoon spent among the changing leaves. Grab a cup of coffee and stroll through Humlegården in the Östermalm district, or take a commuter train out to the Järvafältet nature reserve for a quiet lunch and stunning fall foliage and field views.

Stockholm International Film Festival

Each November, indie filmmakers from around the world gather at the 10-day Stockholm International Film Festival. Check out new films, attend seminars by world-renowned industry figures and mingle with movie luminaries. Smaller and more intimate than Cannes or Sundance, the festival offers ample opportunity to meet your favorite actors and directors.

Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival

Join other beer and whisky connoisseurs at the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival, which takes place near the beginning of October. Participate in tasting events to expand your palette, or try out different brews on tap to find a new favorite. Bring a group and enjoy a day of drinks and snacks, or learn more by attending information sessions and classes.

Join the Locals for Fika

“Fika” is a beloved tradition in Stockholm that involves coffee, dessert and friendly conversation. When a fall vacation day turns cold or rainy, don’t despair! Grab your travel buddy and head to Café Panorama or Lisas Café & Hembageri for a strong cup of coffee and homemade pastries — for the full Swedish experience, try a marzipan covered princess cake or a slice of apple cake with vanilla icing.

Hit the Water

During the warm summer months, tourists crowd onto boats to sail through the thousands of islands that make up the Stockholm archipelago. If you’re visiting in the fall, enjoy the same experience, complete with shorter lines and less crowded boats. Book a full-day or half-day tour from any travel agency in the city center; many include excursions and activities. Go back in time on the island of Grinda, which prohibits traffic and boasts numerous walking trails.  If you’re after a more high-end experience, check out the regular festivals on Sandön, the farthest island from Stockholm. Alternatively, bundle up and take a ferry through the islands to take advantage of crisp air and beautiful photographic opportunities.

No matter what the weather, Stockholm offers an endless array of activities for autumn visitors. Whether you’re interested in sightseeing or snacking, you’re sure to find a pleasant pastime.

Tips For Visiting Stockholm On A Budget

September 18, 2016 By Aiden Leave a Comment

stockholm water view

The summer is coming to an end, but you want to get one more vacation in. You might want to go somewhere more exotic like in Europe for example, maybe like Stockholm, Sweden. But what if you don’t have much money to do so once you get there. Here are a few tips to enjoy your stay in Stockholm while on a budget.

  • Stay in a Floating Hotel: The name is just as it suggests: it is a hotel on a boat. Think of it like a cruise in a sense. These boat hotels cost a fraction of what you would pay for a hotel on land and you get to enjoy the view while you are at it.
  • Take a Free Walking Tour: This is one of the oldest activities in the book. You get to see many great sights in Stockholm without having to pay a single euro. Plus, you can also get in a good amount of exercise at the same time.
  • Drink tap water: Now, this might not be exactly a safe option wherever you go given the different qualities of water around the world. But, this will save you some money. Stockholm’s water is safe to drink. Take a reusable water bottle and refill it in the sink whenever you get the chance.
  • Cook Your Own Food: Most people don’t like to cook in this modern age. However, this is a better alternative than going out to eat at restaurants and fast food places all of the time. Plus according to NomadicMatt.com, “Groceries in Stockholm can cost 415 SEK ($63 USD) per week per person, which is a great value when the average prepared meal is around 100–200 SEK ($15–30).” That’s actually not bad if you think about it.
  • Avoid Sit-Down Restaurants: This will be painful to hear, but this is crucial if you want to save money. If you insist on eating out or you don’t feeling like cooking, NomadicMatt.com suggests, “try to stick to the small outdoor stalls you see on the side of the street. You can get everything from hotdogs ($3) to Thai food ($10) to burgers ($10). It’s a much more economical way to eat. Additionally, skip anything on Drottninggatan (the city’s main shopping street) and in Gamla Stan. Both places are very overpriced.”
  • Go Check Out the Free Museums: Like any other country in the world, it would be past to indulge in the museums. You get to learn about history, drink up the art and culture, and maybe learn a little more about yourself. The Guardian offers travelers to use the Stockholm Pass Card. The site adds, “This one-four day card allows access to more than 75 attractions and museums and unlimited rides on public transport (£42 for one-day, £68 for four)”
  • Take Your Kids to the Library: But what if you are a traveler with small children in tow? You will be surprised at how child-friendly Stockholm is. Parents with strollers can ride for free on the buses. Plus, there is plenty for the kids to do with free activities, workshops, children’s libraries, and museums. The Guardian adds, “Most of Stockholm’s public libraries have special children’s sections where you can also play games and take part in impromptu theatre shows.” Even without children, you can still enjoy the library in Stockholm.
  • Follow the Locals at Lunch: Most countries offer tourists and travelers cheap tourist food. If you want the really good food of the country, you find the nearest local and you follow them to wherever they eat. The locals will know where all of the good things are.
  • Go to the Free Parks: Human beings all love a little fresh air from time to time. The parks in Stockholm are free and if you happen to go in the winter, take advantage of the ice skating there. No matter what season you choose to go to Stockholm, the parks are a beautiful place to visit and get yourself lost in nature.
  • Cut Back on the Alcohol: Let’s face it, alcohol is not cheap and can really add up if you are not care. Drinking in Sweden will eat up all the money that you have in your wallet. For all of the travelers that love to have a drink from time to time, avoid wine, skip the clubs, and stick to beer which is the cheapest thing in the country. It may be painful, but your wallet will be happy for it.

Gamla Stan means ‘Old Town.’ It is believed to be the oldest town in Sweden and is where town life began in the country at around the 13th Century. The streets are as narrow as 90cm in the town. It is located on the island of Stadsholmen. There is a lot of medieval architecture in the town. There are many souvenir shops in the Old Town, and one can get a feel of the country’s culture by visiting this place.  The Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum, and the Royal Palace can all be found here.

2.    Go dancing
Stockholm has a vibrant nightlife, to say the least. There are plenty of bars and clubs in Stockholm. There is Berns, which is a multi-floor nightclub and Trädgården which is also a multi-floor nightclub located under a bridge. Sweden has some of the world’s best house producers and DJs including Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso, Alesso, and Axwell.  Many up and coming DJs hold concerts and perform in nightclubs all over the city. Most clubs will close at 1 a.m on weekdays but on the weekend you can dance till 5 a.m in the morning.

3.    Boat trip
Stockholm is a city made up of about 14 islands. The best way to get a view of the city is by boat. The sea flows through the city like blood through the body’s veins. Sightseeing in this fashion especially during September will expose you to amazing sights. You can rent a summer house on different islands and travel to the city every day by boat. It makes for a hell of a commute. There are boat trips to pass under the bridges of Stockholm or you can get Hop-on and hop-off tickets. You can also take a smaller boat to tour the canals of the city. You can stop over at any of the thousands of islands surrounding the city.

4.   Visit the Moderna Museet
Moderna Museet means the modern art museum. The museum has some of the beast of the last century and this century. Some of the items in the museum’s collection date back as far as 1840. The museum has a great history, and it is interesting to get the feel of the museum once you are inside. Some of the artists whose work is contained in the Moderna Museet is the famous Picasso, Derkert, Dali and even Matisse. The building’s architecture is superb and was designed by Spaniard Rafael Moneo. The museum has guided tours and on Friday they offer free entrance as from 1800hrs to 2000hrs.

5.    Visit Parks and Gardens
Stockholm magnificently manages to preserve some of its natural beauty despite being a very modern city. There are many places where you can bear witness to the city’s natural essence. There are parks such as the Royal National City Park which has a forest with plenty of animals like deer, moose, foxes and beautiful birds. There is also Hellasgården, a nature reserve with a lake and a vast expanse of forest. The reserve is peaceful and has massive old trees. There are walking, running and cycling trails for whoever would like to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

6.    Visit the King’s Residence
The King’s Palace in Stockholm is one of the largest palaces in Europe. It has over 600 rooms, and it could take you an entire day to tour half of them i.e. the most fascinating among them. The palace functions as the Royal Office making it one of the biggest offices in the World. The palace has five museums including a Royal coin collection. It also has the Royal Armory. The armory has incredible carriages and costumes. At the palace, you can catch a glimpse of how massive and impressive the Swedish Empire once was. The castle also houses a museum of crowns. You will see huge gems and priceless metal crowns worn by previous Kings and Queens.

7.    Visit the Vasa Museum
The Vasa Museum houses the Vasa battleship that sank during its maiden voyage. The design and size of the ship, given that it was built in the 15th Century, is quite astounding. Though the ship has been restored about 95 percent of the ship is made from its original material. The Vasa Museum is the most visited the museum in the country and deserves that acclaim. Upon setting your eyes on the ship, you will marvel, and you will slightly lose your breath. You can make it a family affair as entry is free for anyone under the age of 18.
